Ellinwood is located in Barton, [BT], County just north of the Arkansas River. Highway 56 and the original Santa Fe mainline passed through town. That line is now owned and operated by the Kansas & Oklahoma Railroad Company.

Ellinwood lies midway between the Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira Wildlife Refuge, both natural wetlands that attract nature lovers and hunters.
